Creating Nature Art With Intention: My Interview On The Left Brain Artist Podcast

Spring is just about here. Buds are swelling on branches, and the birdsong has intensified. Around this time of year, there’s a bubbling excitement in my core and it’s not just from the champagne Kenny and I just drank to celebrate our fifth wedding anniversary. It comes from a renewed sense of opportunity both in the studio and in the rest of life (like the baby donkey we’re expecting Winnie to pop out anytime soon...don’t worry, there will be pictures). A few weeks ago, I was lucky enough to be interviewed by fellow Florida artist Suzanne Redmond for her podcast “The Left Brain Artist.”

Weekly, Suzanne dives into each artist’s story, their art-making process, as well as how they sell and market their work. When I realized the podcast addressed both the creative and practical sides of life as an artist, I said, count me in! I’m a firm believer that, like wine and cheese, art and business don’t need to be exclusive of one another. It may be sacrilege to admit this but, I get almost as giddy about numbers and business strategy as I do art supplies.

When we sat down, we discussed everything from my life as a mother to almost 30 animals and why I rarely use them as my subject matter, to my latest collection of embroidered mixed-media pieces, and also WHY I release my work in collections rather than one-off pieces.

In the podcast you’ll also learn:

  • Materials matter. From the initial piece to the framing, every choice should be intentional.

  • Why I was fired from my first job.

  • What cues I take from the world of high fashion.

  • My Victorian-era inspirations.

  • Why I have a Collector’s Club.

  • How nature inspires me.

  • Why I believe it’s important to create with intentionality and thought...even if that intention is to play!
